What does the Shield of Achilles say about Ancient Greece?

I'm supposed to examine the dark ages of Greece (religion, economy, military, and politics) using Homer's passage on the Shield of Achilles from the Iliad. I'm very confused by all the symbolism. Help me dissect this?
