Why does everyone have to read certain historic books in compulsory education?

Books are written for entertainment. still, they serve another purpose of spreading knowledge. when you read the books that you have mentioned, you knowingly or unknowingly tend to learn about the culture, language, trends followed by the poepl of that particular time. even if the book is fictional, you get to learn about the given things through the writer's point of view.
